Tesla’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) Megafactory in Shanghai, which produces energy storage products, will officially start production a week from today, after trial production began at the end of 2024.<\/p>\n

Tesla plans to hold a ceremony to mark the factory’s official start of production at the Shanghai Megafactory on the morning of February 11, the electric vehicle (EV) maker was quoted as saying in a report today by local media outlet Shanghai Securities News.<\/p>\n

The Megafactory will begin capacity ramp-up in the first quarter, the report said.<\/p>\n

The factory was completed at the end of December 2024, with construction completed in seven months, setting a new \u201cTesla Speed,\u201d the brief report said.<\/p>\n

Tesla\u00a0began construction of the Shanghai Megafactory<\/a>\u00a0on May 23, 2024, its first energy storage project outside the United States.<\/p>\n

The factory is located in the Lingang district of Pudong, Shanghai, which is also home to Tesla’s EV factory in China, producing the Model 3 and Model Y.<\/p>\n

Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group is the first customer in China for the plant’s product, Megapack, and signed with Tesla about the first orders at a groundbreaking ceremony last May.<\/p>\n

On December 31, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the Tesla Megafactory completed construction and\u00a0begun trial production<\/a>, with mass production expected to begin in early 2025.<\/p>\n

Tesla’s energy storage products include the Powerwall, Powerpack and Megapack. The Shanghai Megafactory mainly produces Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, which will be supplied to the global market.<\/p>\n

The Megafactory was expected to go into production in the first quarter of 2025, and Megapack production will be as high as 10,000 units per year, with nearly 40 GWh of energy storage, Tesla previously said.<\/p>\n

The Megapack is a powerful battery that stores energy and supplies it, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent power outages. 40 GWh of power is enough to power 50,000 homes in Shanghai for a year.<\/p>\n

Each Megapack unit can store more than 3 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for an hour, according to Tesla’s website.<\/p>\n

In June last year, local media outlet LatePost reported that the main supplier of the battery cells used in Tesla’s Shanghai Megapack was finalized as\u00a0CATL<\/a>, with\u00a0BYD<\/a>‘s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY)\u00a0FinDreams Battery as an alternative supplier<\/a>.<\/p>\n
