How? Breakthrough innovations in cell chemistry and materials, simplifying and speeding up cell manufacturing processes, a\u00a0structural battery, and the company&#8217;s new 4680 form factor. So what do the experts think of Tesla&#8217;s battery innovations?<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/Tesla-battery-Day-collage.jpg?v=1601672463\" alt=\"\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Above: A look at Tesla&#8217;s Battery Day (Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/teslas-new-battery-design-is-brilliant-says-a-top-researcher-2020-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider<\/a>,\u00a0a &#8220;top battery researcher&#8221; watched Tesla&#8217;s Battery Day and concluded: &#8220;I give it an A-plus.&#8221; Who&#8217;s this expert?\u00a0Shirley Meng is\u00a0Editor-in-Chief of MRS Energy &amp; Sustainability and\u00a0has been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/smeng.ucsd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working<\/a>\u00a0in the field for over a decade.\u00a0She&#8217;s also founding director of the Sustainable Power and Energy Center\u00a0at the University of California San Diego where she&#8217;s also involved in nano-engineering and materials science.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s completely new as far as I know,&#8221;\u00a0Meng says of Tesla&#8217;s new 4680 battery concept. &#8220;Academic groups haven&#8217;t been looking at this design. We usually don&#8217;t talk about batteries of this scale.&#8221;\u00a0The tab-less design of the new Tesla cell is &#8220;brilliant,&#8221; she noted. &#8220;It&#8217;s really an engineering achievement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/4680-Tesla-Cell.jpg?v=1601394023\" alt=\"Tesla 4680 cell\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Above:\u00a0Fig 1: Tesla\u2019s future 4680 battery cell. 6X more power, 5X more energy, and 16% more range (Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The tab side used to be the weakest link,&#8221; she explained. &#8220;Tesla gets a 10 out of 10 for handing this difficult issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meng\u00a0says, &#8220;I look forward to studying it in more detail.&#8221; In the meantime, it turns out someone else has\u00a0<em>already<\/em>\u00a0begun preliminary investigations into Tesla&#8217;s next-gen battery.<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/4680-Cell-Formation-Demonstration.jpg?v=1601394817\" alt=\"\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Above: Sandy Munro has already begun &#8216;mocking up&#8217; the look of Tesla&#8217;s new battery packs utilizing the bigger cells\u00a0(Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/munrolive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MunroLive.com<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reverse engineering (and vehicle teardown) auto\u00a0expert Sandy Munro has been working to figure out Tesla&#8217;s secrets for years.\u00a0In fact, he recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evannex.com\/blogs\/news\/sandy-munro-compares-tesla-motors-and-inverters-with-the-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revealed some of his findings<\/a>\u00a0related to the Tesla&#8217;s motors and inverters. After Battery Day, he decided to turn his attention to Tesla&#8217;s new 4680. When asked about it, Munro\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/G_yp1jJMDPg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confessed<\/a>, &#8220;I&#8217;m super-duper geeked. I really like what&#8217;s going on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why? To uncover the many reasons, Munro presents a comprehensive overview\u00a0on his YouTube channel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCj--iMtToRO_cGG_fpmP5XQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Munro Live<\/a>. To start, according to\u00a0his calculations, in the same space as a current 74 kWh\u00a0Tesla Model Y\u00a0battery pack, a 130 kWh battery pack can be accommodated \u2014 that\u2019s about double the energy storage.<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/Cells-Per-Brick-Module-4680.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/Cells-Per-Brick-Module-4680_1024x1024.jpg?v=1601394340\" alt=\"4680 cell based battery vs. 2170.\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Fig 2: 4680 vs. 2170 cell Tesla battery pack\u00a0\u2014 more energy storage in the same battery pack space (Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/munrolive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MunroLive.com<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 2170 cell is 5000 mAh and Munro\u2019s analysis says the 4680 new Tesla cell will be around ~9000 mAH. Currently, 4,416 (2170) cells are placed inside\u00a0Tesla Model 3\/Y Long-Range battery packs. In contrast, there will only be 960 cells required to fill the same space (see Fig 2 above).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the 4680 cell-based battery pack will be much simpler and cheaper to build. The 2170 based battery pack architecture is made of cells divided into 4 modules and further into bricks of 46 cells each.<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/960-4680-Cells-Can-Fit-Same-Space.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/960-4680-Cells-Can-Fit-Same-Space_1024x1024.jpg?v=1601394559\" alt=\"Rows and columns of 4680 cell in a Tesla battery pack.\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Fig 3: A total of ~960 new 4680 battery cells fit in the same packaging space (Source: Tesla\u00a0<\/em><em>\/\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/munrolive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MunroLive.com<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This complexity will be eliminated by using the new 4680 cell design and coupled with the tabless cell construction, the manufacturing process becomes even simpler (requiring fewer parts).<\/p>\n<p>During Tesla&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teslaoracle.com\/2020\/09\/23\/model-y-giga-casting-structural-battery-innovations-battery-day-part-1\/#presentation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Battery Day presentation<\/a>, Elon Musk showed the dissection of 2170 vs. 4680 battery pack. Currently, in the 2170 battery packs, the cells are cooled from the sides. However, in the future, Tesla is planning to do it the right way \u2014 installing a cooling plate underneath the batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Munro also measured the length of the steel case cover of 2170 battery cells. By doing so,\u00a0he estimates that with a lower number of 4680 cells, Tesla will be able to reduce around 30-40% of the steel used in the battery pack (see Fig 5 below).<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/Steel-Case-4680-vs-2170..jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/Steel-Case-4680-vs-2170._1024x1024.jpg?v=1601396930\" alt=\"4680 cell weight and cost reduction.\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Fig 5: Usage of steel reduces about 30-40% with the new 4680 battery cells (Source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/munrolive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MunroLive.com<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0cost and time savings resulting from the new 4680 cells will come from reducing the number of connections between the cells. With fewer cells, the new battery pack will require around 1,800 connections compared to the current packs with ~8,800 wire tabs.<\/p>\n<p>Munro then goes on to praise the\u00a0innovative\u00a0approach\u00a0of the single-piece front and rear underbody castings. This happens to be a revolutionary concept he&#8217;s been passionately promoting since 2017. But no automaker\u00a0wanted to\u00a0adopt it. Until now.
