To which the entire engineering community rose up as one to say, \u201cNo duh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"aX0R2K\">Or at least that\u2019s how it should have happened in a just world. Instead, all the Tesla sycophants and ass-kissers on Twitter told Musk to keep up the good work, that they believed in him, and encouraged him to hurry up and roll out the latest version of his \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d software that, it\u2019s worth pointing out, does not enable a Tesla vehicle to drive itself without input from the driver.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"Ey3ddg\"><q>MUSK HAS A LONG HISTORY OF OVER PROMISING AND UNDER DELIVERING<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"N5rmDB\">Musk has a long history of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/5\/7\/22424592\/tesla-elon-musk-autopilot-dmv-fsd-exaggeration\">over promising and under delivering<\/a>\u00a0when it comes to his company\u2019s so-called \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d software.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/6\/11\/17449076\/tesla-autopilot-full-self-driving-elon-musk\">He did it in 2018<\/a>, when he promised that the \u201clong awaited\u201d V9 (Version 9) would begin rolling out in August.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/4\/24\/18512580\/elon-musk-tesla-driverless-cars-lidar-simulation-waymo\">He did it again in 2019<\/a>, proclaiming that \u201ca year from now\u201d there would be \u201cover a million cars with full self-driving, software, everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"dyWRd9\">He was back at it again this past weekend, promising that \u201cFSD 9 beta is shipping soon,\u201d with an added \u201cI swear!\u201d just in case you had any doubts about his solemnity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"JB87Cs\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3R3ZWV0X2VtYmVkX2NsaWNrYWJpbGl0eV8xMjEwMiI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJjb250cm9sIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=true&amp;id=1411280212470366213&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theverge.com%2F2021%2F7%2F5%2F22563751%2Ftesla-elon-musk-full-self-driving-admission-autopilot-crash&amp;sessionId=319de4382c7d97d32a227453f087da0b70a9776e&amp;siteScreenName=verge&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=82e1070%3A1619632193066&amp;width=550px\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1411280212470366213\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"OTkYsS\">There\u2019s no question that Tesla is more willing than its competitors to test beta versions of its Autopilot driver assist feature on its customers in the interest of gathering data and working out any bugs in the system. And Tesla customers are mostly fine with this, routinely flooding Musk\u2019s mentions begging to be white-listed for the current version of Full Self-Driving. This has helped contribute to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2019-tesla-model-3-survey\/autopilot.html?sref=ExbtjcSG\">Tesla\u2019s public reputation<\/a>\u00a0as a leader in autonomous driving, despite its vehicles continuously falling short of what most experts would agree defines a self-driving car.<\/p>\n<p id=\"HQKzE7\">Tesla says Autopilot is safe \u2014 it releases quarterly reports with selectively reported data that it says proves this \u2014 but that it also requires constant input from the driver in order to work. Meanwhile, AV companies like Waymo have real driverless vehicles on public roads giving rides to passengers. Waymo, like practically every AV company, uses a combination of different sensors, like radar, lidar, and cameras, to ensure there are redundancies in case any system failures. Tesla recently switched to a camera-only sensing system. The contrast between Tesla and every other company pursuing self-driving technology couldn\u2019t be more stark.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-ad m-ad__dynamic_ad_unit mb-3 m-ad__desktop_article_body_failsafe dfp_ad-wrapper--is-filled\" data-concert-ads-name=\"desktop_article_body_failsafe\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"1RKBgl\"><q>I, FOR ONE, AM ALL FOR MUSK TAKING AS LONG AS HE WANTS<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"nTXOkC\">I, for one, am all for Musk taking as long as he wants with the release of V9. Let the cake bake for as long as it needs, in my opinion, especially after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/m.weibo.cn\/status\/4655186671568775?#&amp;video\">viewing videos like the one to just come out of China<\/a>\u00a0of a Tesla Model 3 in Autopilot utterly failing to take a sharp turn and crashing into a ditch.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bboT68\">An anonymous Twitter user who uses the handle @greentheonly to post \u201chacks\u201d of Tesla\u2019s Autopilot, recreated the scenario to demonstrate how the company\u2019s driver assist feature struggles with these sharp turns. Quite the opposite actually.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-tesla-crash\/u-s-safety-agency-reviewing-23-tesla-crashes-three-from-recent-weeks-idUSKBN2BA2ML\">The number of open investigations<\/a>\u00a0into vehicle crashes involving Tesla Autopilot seems to be growing in inverse relation to customer expectations about Musk\u2019s ability to deliver on the promises he\u2019s been making (and breaking) for years now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"g38sAa\">Musk isn\u2019t alone in coming to the realization that self-driving cars are hard.
