Credit: American Municipal Power<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tech transfer \u2014 Safer batteries on impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several electrolyte and thin-film coating technologies, developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, have been licensed by BTRY, a battery technology company based in Virginia, to make\u00a0<a class=\"word_1650295189651\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/doe-explainsbatteries\">batteries<\/a>\u00a0with increased energy density, at lower cost, and with an improved safety profile in crashes.<\/p>\n<p>The enabling technologies, called Safe Impact Resistant Electrolytes, or SAFIRE, are particularly suitable for application in the electric vehicles and aerospace industries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a lithium-ion battery, a thin piece of plastic separates the two electrodes,\u201d said ORNL\u2019s Gabriel Veith. \u201cIf the battery is damaged and the plastic layer fails, the electrodes can come into contact and cause the battery&#8217;s liquid electrolyte to catch fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/news\/these-lithium-ion-batteries-cant-catch-fire-because-they-harden-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ORNL\u2019s technology<\/a>\u00a0mixes an additive into the conventional electrolyte to create an impact-resistant electrolyte. It solidifies when hit, preventing the electrodes from touching if the battery is damaged. Credit: Carlos Jones\/ORNL, U.S. Dept. of Energy<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Imaging \u2014 Lithium light bright<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers demonstrated an electron microscopy technique for imaging lithium in energy storage materials, such as lithium ion batteries, at the atomic scale.<\/p>\n<p>The properties of energy storage materials stem directly from their atomic structures, which are only visible using electron microscopy. Today&#8217;s advanced electron microscopes are able to image heavy elements at atomic resolution.
