And while it has become extremely ubiquitous, the resources it takes to be manufactured continue to be extremely difficult to reach.<\/p>\n<p>However, an energy startup dubbed\u00a0<span id=\"highlight_102574\" class=\"editor-highlight\" data-id=\"102574\" data-type=\"highlight\">Alsym Energy has developed a novel battery tech that doesn\u2019t really use Lithium-ion or even cobalt for that matter for its batteries.<\/span>\u00a0Instead, they&#8217;re making use of a top-secret (patent pending) tech that is not only more affordable but also less harmful for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Reported first by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90761039\/these-rechargeable-batteries-are-more-sustainable-and-safer-than-lithium-and-half-the-cost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><b>FastCompany<\/b><\/a>, the idea behind the development of the battery was actually to make it affordable to allow it to be widely used. Its goal is to allow manufacturers to create lower-cost electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"highlight_102575\" class=\"editor-highlight\" data-id=\"102575\" data-type=\"highlight\">While the company hasn\u2019t shed light on the tech they&#8217;re using or the chemicals at play for delivering the energy, what they have revealed is that it is a water-based battery and makes use of affordable, readily available components such as manganese and metal oxide.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"highlight_102576\" class=\"editor-highlight\" data-id=\"102576\" data-type=\"highlight\">With years of testing, today the batteries perform on par with lithium-ion ones<\/span>, claims Kripa Varanasi, a mechanical engineer from MIT who\u2019s a part of Alsym.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike lithium-ion, these batteries aren\u2019t flammable, and this in turn helps in reducing costs further as they don\u2019t need to add additional protection to the batteries to prevent fires. In fact, Alsym is currently in collaboration with an Indian automaker and is expected to begin beta testing of its batteries by early 2023. The target production date is for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>While Alsym hasn\u2019t revealed the Indian automaker, as of now, the two big players in the Indian electric scene are Mahindra and Mahindra and Tata.
