Obviously, that\u2019ll accelerate the adoption of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/electric-vehicles\/\" data-uri=\"20c6d76b889a3e9762b0577c8fe79094\">electric vehicles<\/a>\u00a0and encourage other states to do the same. (Oregon has already\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2022\/08\/26\/oregon-transition-zero-emissions-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2022\/08\/26\/oregon-transition-zero-emissions-vehicles\/\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2022\/08\/26\/oregon-transition-zero-emissions-vehicles\/&quot;}\" data-uri=\"065c6db83ba05f8439bb945827239ec5\">followed California\u2019s lead<\/a>.) But less obviously, spurning carbon-spewing vehicles could help buttress the United States\u2019 ancient, creaky electrical grids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cars are no longer just modes of transportation; they are increasingly integrated into the larger energy infrastructure. If your EV is sitting in your garage fully charged (cars are typically parked\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/usa.streetsblog.org\/2016\/03\/10\/its-true-the-typical-car-is-parked-95-percent-of-the-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/usa.streetsblog.org\/2016\/03\/10\/its-true-the-typical-car-is-parked-95-percent-of-the-time\/\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/usa.streetsblog.org\/2016\/03\/10\/its-true-the-typical-car-is-parked-95-percent-of-the-time\/&quot;}\" data-uri=\"52ca1f5188404858b8f9a87d441d102c\">95 percent of the time<\/a>) and you lose power, that big battery offers an opportunity to keep the lights on. And when there\u2019s a sudden spike in demand for the grid\u2014because everyone wants to turn on their AC during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/californias-heat-wave-is-a-big-moment-for-batteries\/\" data-uri=\"ddd12b4848985554cd2298a916618a64\">heat wave<\/a>\u00a0or their heat during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/texas-disaster-makes-the-case-for-uniting-the-grid\/\" data-uri=\"15e1db7c478b973f5ed05c9872dda40c\">deep freeze<\/a>\u2014utilities could pay homeowners for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/when-the-grid-goes-down-can-a-fleet-of-batteries-replace-it\/\" data-uri=\"d468ac8a0494a8129660fd243d128860\">their excess battery power<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This is known as\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/femp\/bidirectional-charging-and-electric-vehicles-mobile-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/femp\/bidirectional-charging-and-electric-vehicles-mobile-storage\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/femp\/bidirectional-charging-and-electric-vehicles-mobile-storage&quot;}\" data-uri=\"23550488f49df56986f73a4f2173878b\">bidirectional<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ovoenergy.com\/guides\/electric-cars\/vehicle-to-grid-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.ovoenergy.com\/guides\/electric-cars\/vehicle-to-grid-technology\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.ovoenergy.com\/guides\/electric-cars\/vehicle-to-grid-technology&quot;}\" data-uri=\"eac2a96d50fc6877353dc132d005af0b\">vehicle-to-grid<\/a>\u00a0charging (aka V2G), and it\u2019s \u201cone of the legitimate game changers,\u201d says Clifford Rechtschaffen, commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission. \u201cIf all the EVs in the state plug in during these peak load times and feed power back to the grid, they\u2019re acting as giant batteries. We could use them to greatly relieve stress on the grid during the periods of greatest need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s still early days for V2G. More than 100 V2G pilots are scattered worldwide, though most are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/the-future-of-electric-vehicle-charging-is-bidirectional-if-you-can-afford-it\" data-uri=\"47955ae8d6d25c47cf59221d7ccacfc6\">in Europe<\/a>. California\u2019s experimentation has been limited to small test programs. Still, more makers of cars and chargers are offering two-way charging, and experts think the concept could work on a large scale. Some 200 million electric vehicles could be on global roads by 2030, according to a\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/fuels-and-technologies\/electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/fuels-and-technologies\/electric-vehicles\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.iea.org\/fuels-and-technologies\/electric-vehicles&quot;}\" data-uri=\"8a37f061c40ceb72e8acc8f8ada2ab44\">recent estimate<\/a>. California alone could have 14 million by 2035, the Natural Resources Defense Council\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/max-baumhefner\/how-electric-cars-and-trucks-improve-grid-reliability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/max-baumhefner\/how-electric-cars-and-trucks-improve-grid-reliability\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/max-baumhefner\/how-electric-cars-and-trucks-improve-grid-reliability&quot;}\" data-uri=\"c953c94a5b2133b74f77bdcc618917ce\">estimates<\/a>. If just local utilities could exploit all those batteries, they\u2019d be able to power every home in the state for three days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When someone plugs in a car to charge it, alternating current (AC) power is converted into direct current voltage, which is stored inside the car\u2019s battery. If the owner has a bidirectional charger, that DC power can be converted back to AC and added to the grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bidirectional chargers are far from common today and can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/the-future-of-electric-vehicle-charging-is-bidirectional-if-you-can-afford-it\" data-uri=\"47955ae8d6d25c47cf59221d7ccacfc6\">be expensive, often requiring additional specialized hardware.<\/a>\u00a0Yet automakers and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/28\/are-bidirectional-ev-chargers-ready-for-the-home-market\/\" data-uri=\"acd8b20524131ca9fd112410c6dac483\">other companies<\/a>\u00a0are starting to roll them out to help EV owners contribute to the grid, or to store and then convert power for their own purposes. Ford\u2019s new electric F-150 can power a home for up to three days\u2014a serious perk in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ford-lightning-f150-electric-vehicle-dystopia\/\" data-uri=\"b74fd0bc99d59177d93cfc6cae150c23\">climate-change-wracked dystopia<\/a>\u00a0to come. Volkswagen has touted the bidirectional charging capabilities of its newest and upcoming EVs. Just this month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/9\/12\/23349971\/nissan-leaf-bidirectional-charging-approved-v2h-v2g-fermata-energy\" data-uri=\"745becb77de50b4c1330f0d2ec7366d1\">Nissan approved<\/a>\u00a0the first bidirectional charger for the all-electric Leaf, a car that has been sold in the US for almost 12 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But utilities will likely play the biggest role in ushering in a new era of electricity grids, says\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/max-baumhefner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/max-baumhefner\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/max-baumhefner&quot;}\" data-uri=\"bbad9a21631f4d72a2404949c645dd4c\">Max Baumhefner<\/a>, a senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council. This summer, San Diego Gas &amp; Electric launched a five-year pilot project with the V2G technology company Nuvve and a local school district to hook up eight school buses. The benefit is both the jumbo size of these batteries and how they\u2019re used: Buses pick up and drop off kids on a reliable schedule, so they can sit idle and send energy back into the grid at predictable times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAll they are are batteries with wheels, right?\u201d says Miguel Romero, vice president of energy innovation at San Diego Gas &amp; Electric. Operators of fleets of other large commercial vehicles might also hook into similar V2G programs. \u201cI think it starts to become a bigger\u2014a better\u2014proposition to potentially have these large amounts of energy parked in certain parking lots provide energy back,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If V2G were deployed across California, that would build more flexibility into the grid. It would be especially important during a heat wave, when demand spikes in the late afternoon as people return home and switch on their air conditioners. Utilities anticipate this demand spike quite well, but it\u2019s still a challenge to balance it with the electricity supply\u2014especially because that supply starts to wane in the late afternoon as solar production winds down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">California\u2019s daily energy conservation alerts worked, but that\u2019s a rather broad way to face down a heat event, especially as climate change is making extreme weather\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/did-climate-change-make-that-freak-weather-even-worse\/\" data-uri=\"a628225ebf1ca933cfd2ee3bebc5eebf\">ever more extreme<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s very non-granular\u2014a big hammer for a very sensitive subject,\u201d says Jan Kleissl, director of the Center for Energy Research at the University of California, San Diego. \u201cWe can incentivize people that way, but we don\u2019t have any other good way to adjust the load on a smaller time scale, like 10 minutes or half an hour. All those small fluctuations actually matter a lot on the power grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">By using wide-scale V2G, by contrast, a utility would have a much more sophisticated tool for managing spikes in demand. If truckers park their electrified rigs in a lot at the end of the day, a grid operator could tap into those batteries right as demand is going up.
