Compared to traditional nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, LFP packs are cheaper to produce, pose a lower fire risk and offer greater longevity. However, they\u2019re less energy-dense, which is why automakers typically use LFP batteries in entry-level models like the rear-wheel-drive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/model-3\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"1\" data-params=\"%7B%22make_alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22model-3%22%7D\">Tesla Model 3<\/a>, the base\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/ford\/mach-e\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"1\" data-params=\"%7B%22make_alias%22%3A%22ford%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22mach-e%22%7D\">Ford Mustang Mach-E<\/a>\u00a0and the Dual Standard second-gen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/rivian\/r1s\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"1\" data-params=\"%7B%22make_alias%22%3A%22rivian%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22r1s%22%7D\">Rivian R1S<\/a>\u00a0among others.<\/p>\n<p>Automakers say it\u2019s best to charge your vehicle\u2019s LFP battery to a 100% periodically, at least once a week in case of Tesla or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ford.com\/support\/how-tos\/electric-vehicles\/home-charging\/how-do-i-maintain-my-electric-vehicle-battery\/#:~:text=Lithium%20Iron%20Phosphate%20(LFP)%20batteries,charge%20and%20distance%20to%20empty).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">once a month as per Ford<\/a>. This helps with pack calibration, allowing you to have a more accurate range reading on your gauge cluster every time you get behind the wheel. They also recommend doing this to preserve battery health and avoid reduced performance.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the exact opposite for NMC packs\u2014offered on most EVs like Long Range Teslas\u2014where manufacturers suggest setting a limit of 80-90% for daily charging. Charging them to a 100% can reduce the pack\u2019s capacity to hold energy over time. This mainly happens because battery longevity is negatively associated with heat and voltage. The higher the state of charge, the more the voltage and heat in the pack which accelerates degradation.<\/p>\n<p>However, a new study published last week in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1149\/1945-7111\/ad6cbd\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal Of Electrochemical Society<\/a>\u00a0contradicts what automakers have been saying about LFP charging patterns. The study states that repeated charging cycles at a higher state of charge can harm LFP cells over time. The study specifies how this happens on the most granular level. But kudos to YouTuber Jason Fenske of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w1zKfIQUQ-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engineering Explained<\/a>\u00a0for breaking it down for us.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that keeping LFP batteries fully charged creates harmful compounds in the pack from high voltage and heat. As you cycle the pack frequently\u2014meaning discharging and charging fully\u2014these harmful compounds deposit onto the negative electrode, consuming lithium, causing degradation. \u201cAt higher SoC, there\u2019s higher voltage, negative reactions recurring within the electrolyte get accelerated, consuming the lithium inventory,\u201d authors said.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not driving your EV for extended periods, leaving the battery in a lower state of charge can help, as reduced voltage doesn&#8217;t harm in the long run. \u201cCycling near the top of charge (75\u2013100% SoC) is detrimental to LFP\/graphite cells. Our results show a correlation between the average SoC of battery operation and capacity fade rate, meaning that the lower the average SoC, the longer the lifetime\u2026,\u201d the study stated. \u201cTherefore, the time spent cycling at high states of charge is critical to minimize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the study\u2019s authors was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dal.ca\/diff\/dahn\/people\/jeff_dahn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Jeff Dahn<\/a>, an award-winning battery researcher who runs the Tesla-funded Jeff Dahn Research Group. Dahn\u2019s lab is one of Tesla\u2019s lesser known weapons. It helped the brand master the NMC chemistry.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electricautonomy.ca\/news\/2023-08-29\/tesla-jeff-dahn-group-battery-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Electric Autonomy Canada<\/em><\/a>\u00a0toured the Tesla-funded lab in Dalhousie University in Canada last year. The outlet described the relationship between Tesla and the Dahn Research Group as \u201ca yin and yang dynamic. One is a fast-moving, ever-hungry business. The other a slow-moving, diligent academic lab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, it has some flaws. The study states that a 0-25% charging cycle elongates battery life. That seems pointless in terms of convenience for everyday users, especially if you don\u2019t have a home or office charger and rely on public charging. The study focuses solely on battery longevity, not overall best charging practices. It leaves out what\u2019s best for the broader EV-buying audience, like specific use cases, convenience, charging times and more. So it\u2019s still advisable to follow your automaker\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>A higher charge is beneficial in most cases, like road-tripping,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/726819\/houston-hurricane-beryl-electric-cars-power-homes\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22726819%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22houston-hurricane-beryl-electric-cars-power-homes%22%7D\">during power outages if you need vehicle-to-home charging<\/a>, during winter when range loss is accelerated or simply for the peace of mind. Plus, modern batteries last hundreds of thousands of miles even with bad charging practices. It&#8217;s one of the reasons brands offer long warranties on them. That\u2019s not to diminish the study, which still accomplishes the all-important task of discovering more facets of what is still a relatively new technology.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, the authors don&#8217;t recommend changing your charging habits. \u201cHow practical is it to cycle a battery cell in only low SoC ranges?
