The automaker broke ground on its own refinery in Robstown, Texas, near Corpus Christi, in 2023 with the goal of deploying a new, more efficient refining process.<\/p>\n<p>Now, just two years later, Tesla is showing off the operational plant.<\/p>\n<p>The company released a new video update yesterday featuring Jason Bevan, Tesla\u2019s Site Manager for the refinery:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"post-youtube-video-1\" title=\"Tesla Lithium Refinery\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rxYTx6aj96k?feature=oembed&amp;rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rxYTx6aj96k?feature=oembed&amp;rel=0&amp;enablejsapi=1\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-6232102_89=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-31=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In the video, Bevan confirms the impressive timeline of the project:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cFrom breaking ground in 2023 to running rock through the kiln in 2024 to start a full integrated plant startup now in 2025.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Note: While the video was released this week, the \u201cnow in 2025\u201d comment implies the facility likely reached full integrated startup late last year).<\/p>\n<p>Bevan highlights that this is the \u201cfirst spodumene to lithium hydroxide refinery in North America,\u201d marking a significant shift in the region\u2019s battery supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>The video details Tesla\u2019s specific process, which differs significantly from traditional methods:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Feedstock:<\/strong>\u00a0Uses Spodumene (hard rock ore) rather than brine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Processing:<\/strong>\u00a0The ore runs through a kiln and cooler before entering an alkaline leach process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Output:<\/strong>\u00a0It moves to crystallization to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crucially, Tesla confirms that this new \u201ctechnology platform\u201d is acid-free. Traditional lithium refining often involves acid roasting that produces hazardous byproducts like sodium sulfate.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Tesla\u2019s process creates a benign co-product\u2014which Bevan refers to as \u201canaly\u201d (likely Analcime or a similar aluminosilicate)\u2014that consists of sand and limestone.
