Tesla has filed two new trademark applications for the Roadster, including one that reveals what appears to be the first official updated silhouette of the long-delayed electric sports car.<\/p>\n

The filings, submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 3, offer a glimpse at the branding Tesla plans to use for the vehicle that has been \u201ccoming next year\u201d for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n

The first trademark application covers a stylized \u201cROADSTER\u201d wordmark in a stretched, angular font with segmented letters that give it a futuristic, high-performance aesthetic.<\/p>\n

The second filing is more interesting: it shows a sleek vehicle silhouette consisting of three flowing curved lines that form what appears to be the Roadster\u2019s profile. According to the filing, the design depicts \u201ca triangle design consisting of three flowing, curved lines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both applications were filed on an \u201cintent to use\u201d basis, meaning Tesla hasn\u2019t used these logos commercially yet but plans to do so. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben\u00a0noted in a blog post<\/a>\u00a0that this approach allows Tesla to \u201clock in a nationwide priority date, preventing third parties from attempting to register the same or confusingly similar marks after the logos are publicly announced.\u201d<\/p>\n

We recently reported that\u00a0Tesla mishandled trademarks on a couple of occasions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Long history of delays<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve been following the Roadster saga, you know this vehicle has been perpetually two years away since its unveiling in 2017. CEO Elon Musk unveiled the next-generation Roadster prototype alongside the Tesla Semi in November 2017, promising production in 2020.<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

The production date was pushed back multiple times, first to 2022, then 2023, then 2024. Last year,\u00a0Musk reiterated 2025 production<\/a>, but by October 2024,\u00a0he was already waffling<\/a>, saying the design was only \u201cclose to\u201d being finalized.<\/p>\n

In November 2025, Tesla officially\u00a0pushed the Roadster demo to April 1, 2026<\/a>, with production now expected in 2027 or 2028. Musk joked that holding the demo on April Fools\u2019 Day gives him \u201csome deniability\u201d if things don\u2019t go as planned.<\/p>\n

Flying claims and SpaceX package<\/h2>\n

Adding to the mystique, or absurdity, depending on your perspective, Musk has repeatedly claimed that the Roadster will be able to \u201cfly\u201d thanks to a \u201cSpaceX package\u201d featuring cold-air thrusters.\u00a0He has even suggested<\/a>\u00a0that the Roadster \u201cwon\u2019t really be a car\u201d and could hover above the ground.<\/p>\n

In a January interview, Musk said, \u201cIf safety is your number one goal, don\u2019t buy the Roadster,\u201d adding that it would be \u201cthe best of the last of the human-driven cars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given the Roadster\u2019s track record of broken promises, we\u2019ll believe it when we see it. The silhouette looks sleeker, a bit squarer at the roof\u2019s apex than the previous prototype:<\/p>\n

The featured image at the top has been edited to make it look closer to the lines \u2013 assuming Tesla stays with the overall design, which is not a given, considering that it is almost a decade old.<\/p>\n
