WASHINGTON, March 16 (Reuters) – The U.S. government on Monday said electric vehicle maker Tesla\u00a0(TSLA.O), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0and South Korea’s LG \u200bEnergy Solution\u00a0(373220.KS), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0had signed a supply agreement to \u200cbuild a $4.3 billion lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic battery cell manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, with an expected production launch in 2027.<\/div>\n
“American-made \u200bcells will power Tesla’s Megapack 3 energy \u200bstorage systems produced in Houston, creating a robust \u2060domestic battery supply chain,” the U.S. Department of the \u200bInterior said in a statement on Monday.<\/div>\n

The agreement was part \u200bof a broader statement on deals highlighted by President Donald Trump’s administration from the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Summit.<\/div>\n
A source\u00a0told Reuters \u200bin July<\/a>\u00a0that LG Energy Solution had signed \u200ba $4.3 billion deal to supply Tesla with energy storage system \u200cbatteries \u2060as the U.S. company looked to reduce its reliance on Chinese imports due to tariffs.<\/div>\n
At the time, the South Korean company said it had signed a $4.3 \u200bbillion contract \u200bto supply \u2060LFP batteries over three years globally, without identifying the customer or saying if \u200bthey would be used in vehicles or \u200benergy-storage \u2060systems.<\/div>\n
LG Energy Solution is one of the few producers of LFP batteries in the U.S. The LFP \u2060battery \u200bchemistry has long been dominated \u200bby Chinese rivals that have little presence in the U.S. market.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
