They induce unwanted side reactions that reduce energy density, and at worst, cause shorting of the electrodes that can lead to fires or explosions. <span class=\"image-with-caption image-with-caption-border-right image-with-caption-float-left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/asu_news_article_image\/public\/jiang_media_release_image.jpg?itok=FENA-zhA\" alt=\"Lithium-metal battery stress relief\" \/> <span class=\"description\">Adding a silicone &#8220;wrinkle&#8221; layer to lithium metal batteries relieves stress and mitigates dendrite formation.<\/span><span class=\"description\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/jiang_media_release_image.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Download Full Image<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>New research from Arizona State University finds that using a 3-D layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), or silicone, as the substrate of the lithium metal anode can mitigate dendrite formation and both dramatically extend battery life and diminish safety risks. The paper, \u201cStress-driven lithium dendrite growth mechanism and dendrite mitigation by electroplating on soft substrates,\u201d was published today in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-018-0104-5\">Nature Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hanqing Jiang, a professor in ASU&#8217;s School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, and a lead researcher on the paper, the findings have relevance for both lithium-ion and lithium-air batteries, as well as implications for other metal-anode-based batteries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost all metals used as battery anodes tend to develop dendrites,\u201d Jiang explained. \u201cFor example, these findings have implications for zinc, sodium and aluminum batteries as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jiang said he and the research team, rather than approaching the problem from a materials or electrochemical perspective, looked for solutions as mechanical engineers. \u201cWe already know that tiny tin needles or whiskers can protrude out of tin surfaces under stress, so by analogy we looked at the possibility of stress as a factor in lithium dendrite growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first round of research involved adding a layer of PDMS to the bottom of the battery anode.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were remarkable reductions in dendrite growth,\u201d Jiang said.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers discovered that this is directly related to the fact that stress accumulated inside the lithium metal is relieved by the deformation of the PDMS substrate in the form of \u201cwrinkles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time convincing evidence shows that residual stress plays a key role in the initiation of lithium dendrites,\u201d Jiang said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurity.org\/sugar-lithium-metal-batteries-dendrites-1699112\/\">Sugar cubes solve big problem with lithium metal batteries<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/20180307-lithium-related-discovery-could-extend-battery-life-improve-safety\">Lithium-related discovery could extend battery life, improve safety<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted by Emma stein on March 12, 2018 First picture source: pixabay<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[113,91],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-industrial-news","category-news-center"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
