The system is six times more powerful than one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/news\/ornl-surges-forward-20-kilowatt-wireless-charging-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">developed<\/a> by ORNL researchers just two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>In a lab demonstration, the system transferred power at the same rate as a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/05\/21\/tesla-supercharger-v3-quicker-charging-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">wired Tesla Supercharger<\/a> and at more than two times the rate of the wired 50-kilowatt DC fast chargers commonly installed by non-Tesla EV charging network operators.<\/p>\n<p>The wireless charging system unveiled by ORNL in March 2016 transferred 20 kilowatts at 90 percent efficiency. The new 120-kilowatt system provided six times the power with 97 percent efficiency. That efficiency rate, according to ORNL, is comparable to existing wired EV fast chargers.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers achieved the power delivery and efficiency leaps while maintaining the same footprint as the 20-kilowatt system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went significantly up in power, but the footprint remained the same and the power electronics size actually shrunk,\u201d project lead Veda Galigekere told Greentech Media in an interview. Galigekere is a researcher with ORNL\u2019s Power Electronics and Electric Machinery Group.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Boosting power delivery and exploring partnerships with manufacturers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For the 120-kilowatt system, researchers used computer simulations to create new designs for the coils that generate the magnetic field that wirelessly transfers power. And then, \u201cusing silicon carbide-based power electronics, we co-optimized the whole system,\u201d said Galigekere.<\/p>\n<p>The system draws electricity from the grid and converts it to high-frequency alternating current, which generates a magnetic field across a six-inch gap of air. After the electricity is transferred to a second coil, it is converted back to direct current and stored in the vehicle battery pack.<\/p>\n<p>Next steps for Galigekere\u2019s team include research into bidirectional wireless power transfer \u2014 from grid to vehicle and back again \u2014 as well as continued improvement in the system\u2019s power delivery rate.<\/p>\n<p>On making the jump from 20 kilowatts to a 120-kilowatt wireless EV charging system, Galigekere said: \u201cWe are kind of ahead of the curve. But we want to stay ahead of the curve. By the time 120-kilowatt [technology] becomes a reality, we will be ahead of the curve again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ORNL project team\u2019s long-term goal is to develop a wireless charging system able to deliver 350 kilowatts.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are open to working with private-sector partners to advance the technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are talking, and we do talk, with several OEMs,\u201d said Galigekere. He said it\u2019s too early to comment on what potential partnerships might look like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are open to, and we are looking forward to, partners to work on this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Private-sector competition<\/p>\n<p>The ORNL team has private-sector competitors in commercializing wireless EV charging technologies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"greentechmedia_ArticleMPU_3\" class=\"ad medium-rectangle gtmfreestar\" data-google-query-id=\"CJfSk9rBhd8CFRlzYAodsTIHuQ\" data-slot=\"greentechmedia_ArticleMPU_3\" data-classes=\"ad medium-rectangle\" data-tags=\"electric vehicles|electricity|\" data-tagstring=\"googletag.pubads().setTargeting('Tag', ['electric vehicles','electricity']);\" data-height=\"250\" data-width=\"300\"><\/div>\n<p>After completing 10 pilot projects in four countries, the Brooklyn-based wireless charging startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hevopower.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Hevo Inc.<\/a> is transitioning to manufacturing. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-09-04\/there-s-a-plug-free-way-to-fill-the-world-with-electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">profile of the company<\/a> by a team of reporters at Bloomberg, Hevo plans to make thousands of units over the next 18 months to meet supply agreements signed with automakers and utilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/witricity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">WiTricity<\/a>, a wireless charging company based in Watertown, Massachusetts, meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/witricity.com\/anjie-wireless-licenses-witricity-technology-china-electric-vehicle-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">signed an intellectual property licensing agreement<\/a> last month with Anjie Wireless, a China-based auto supplier. Anjie will use WiTricity\u2019s technology to develop wireless charging systems for Chinese automakers. According to WiTricity, its <a href=\"http:\/\/witricity.com\/products\/automotive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Drive 11 system<\/a> can deliver up to 11 kilowatts of power at 93 percent efficiency.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dynamic roadway charging<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The ORNL research team is also committed to developing on-road dynamic wireless charging.
