This leap forward, which comes after more than a decade of incremental improvements, is happening because developers replaced the battery\u2019s graphite anode with one made from silicon. Research from Drexel University and Trinity College in Ireland now suggests that an even greater improvement could be in line if the silicon is fortified with a special type of material called MXene.<\/p>\n<p>This adjustment could extend the life of Li-ion batteries as much as five times, the group recently reported in <em>Nature Communications. <\/em>It\u2019s possible because of the two-dimensional MXene material\u2019s ability to prevent the silicon anode from expanding to its breaking point during charging \u2014 a problem that\u2019s prevented its use for some time.<\/p>\n<section id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_ink_zhang_crop_secRightLeftPhoto\" class=\"thumb-box thumb-box--photo thumb-box--left\">\n<div class=\"thumb-box__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_ink_zhang_crop_imgNoLightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/~\/media\/Images\/now\/v2\/story-images\/2019\/February\/mxene-ink-zhang-crop.ashx?h=284&amp;w=284&amp;hash=7F61EB9521A1209730F8FC3C1C2AD61EF18DF5C8\" alt=\"MXene ink\" \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_ink_zhang_crop_divThumbSidesInfo\" class=\"thumb-box__info\">By combining MXene ink with silicon nanoparticles, researchers can produce silicon anodes that could be used in Li-ion batteries.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilicon anodes are projected to replace graphite anodes in Li-ion batteries with a huge impact on the amount of energy stored,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/engineering\/about\/faculty-staff\/G\/gogotsi-yury\/\"><strong>Yury Gogotsi, PhD<\/strong><\/a>, Distinguished University and Bach Professor in Drexel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/engineering\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>\u00a0and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/nano.drexel.edu\/\">A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/engineering\/academics\/departments\/materials-science-engineering\/\">Department of Materials Science and Engineering<\/a>, who was a co-author of the research. \u201cWe\u2019ve discovered adding MXene materials to the silicon anodes can stabilize them enough to actually be used in batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In batteries, charge is held in electrodes \u2014 the cathode and anode \u2014 and delivered to our devices as ions travel from anode to cathode. The ions return to the anode when the battery is recharged. Battery life has steadily been increased by finding ways to improve the electrodes\u2019 ability to send and receive more ions. Substituting silicon for graphite as the primary material in the Li-ion anode would improve its capacity for taking in ions because each silicon atom can accept up to four lithium ions, while in graphite anodes, six carbon atoms take in just one lithium. But as it charges, silicon also expands \u2014 as much as 300 percent \u2014 which can cause it to break and the battery to malfunction.<\/p>\n<p>Most solutions to this problem have involved adding carbon materials and polymer binders to create a framework to contain the silicon. The process for doing it, according to Gogotsi, is complex and carbon contributes little to charge storage by the battery.<\/p>\n<section id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_si_anode_network_crop_secRightLeftPhoto\" class=\"thumb-box thumb-box--photo thumb-box--top\">\n<div class=\"thumb-box__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_si_anode_network_crop_imgNoLightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/~\/media\/Images\/now\/v2\/story-images\/2019\/February\/mxene-si-anode-network-crop.ashx?h=252&amp;w=575&amp;hash=8C385E29653AEF5815FD60BA02E19F1AB48DDAC6\" alt=\"MXene-silicon anode \" \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_si_anode_network_crop_divThumbSidesInfo\" class=\"thumb-box__info\">During the slurry-casting process, sheets of MXene material combine with silicon particles to form a network that allows for a more orderly reception of lithium ions, which prevents the silicon anode from expanding and breaking.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the Drexel and Trinity group\u2019s method mixes silicon powder into a MXene solution to create a hybrid silicon-MXene anode. MXene nanosheets distribute randomly and form a continuous network while wrapping around the silicon particles, thus acting as conductive additive and binder at the same time. It\u2019s the MXene framework that also imposes order on ions as they arrive and prevents the anode from expanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMXenes are the key to helping silicon reach its potential in batteries,\u201d Gogotsi said. \u201cBecause MXenes are two-dimensional materials, there is more room for the ions in the anode and they can move more quickly into it \u2014 thus improving both capacity and conductivity of the electrode. They also have excellent mechanical strength, so silicon-MXene anodes are also quite durable up to 450 microns thickness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MXenes, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/engineering\/news-events\/news\/archive\/2011\/August\/mxene-a-new-family-of-2-d-transition-metal-carbides-and-nitrides\/\">first discovered at Drexel in 2011<\/a>, are made by chemically etching a layered ceramic material called a MAX phase, to remove a set of chemically-related layers, leaving a stack of two-dimensional flakes. Researchers have produced more than 30 types of MXene to date, each with a slightly different set of properties. The group selected two of them to make the silicon-MXene anodes tested for the paper: titanium carbide and titanium carbonitride. They also tested battery anodes made from graphene-wrapped silicon nanoparticles.<\/p>\n<section id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_anode_making_crop_secRightLeftPhoto\" class=\"thumb-box thumb-box--photo thumb-box--right\">\n<div class=\"thumb-box__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_anode_making_crop_imgNoLightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/~\/media\/Images\/now\/v2\/story-images\/2019\/February\/mxene-anode-making-crop.ashx?h=238&amp;w=272&amp;hash=DEB4BBE0180E662FB21B0648CFED9691BD0FBDA3\" alt=\"MXene-silicon anode\" \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"image_thumbbox_mxene_anode_making_crop_divThumbSidesInfo\" class=\"thumb-box__info\">The process of slurry-casting MXene-silicon anodes is scalable for mass production of anodes.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All three anode samples showed higher lithium-ion capacity than current graphite or silicon-carbon anodes used in Li-ion batteries and superior conductivity \u2014 on the order of 100 to 1,000 times higher than conventional silicon anodes, when MXene is added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe continuous network of MXene nanosheets not only provides sufficient electrical conductivity and free space for accommodating the volume change but also well resolves the mechanical instability of Si,\u201d they write.\u00a0 \u201cTherefore, the combination of viscous MXene ink and high-capacity Si demonstrated here offers a powerful technique to construct advanced nanostructures with exceptional performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chuanfang Zhang, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher at Trinity and lead author of the study, also notes that the production of the MXene anodes, by slurry-casting, is easily scalable for mass production of anodes of any size, which means they could make their way into batteries that power just about any of our devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsidering that more than 30 MXenes are already reported, with more predicted to exist, there is certainly much room for further improving the electrochemical performance of battery electrodes by utilizing other materials from the large MXene family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The study was led by Zhang, a post-doctoral researcher at Trinity College who was a PhD student in Gogotsi\u2019s lab. It was a collaborative effort between Gogotsi and Trinity professors Jonathan N. Coleman and Valeria Nicolosi, recognized European leaders in the field of 2D materials.
