In fact however, it was quite sane. Panasonic\u2019s 18650 battery cell was an industry standard with a proven record of performance that was being produced in large numbers. While other EV pioneers such as Fisker ran into problems with proprietary battery technology, Tesla could count on a secure supply of tried-and-true cells. Since then, Tesla has steadily improved the cells, but it stuck with the 18650 format (named for its size: 18 mm in diameter and 65 mm high) for Models S and X. While other EV-makers opted for larger pouch-style cells, Tesla continued to see the 18650 cells as <a href=\"https:\/\/chargedevs.com\/features\/teslas-batteries-past-present-and-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most compelling option<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Above: A look at Tesla&#8217;s new 2170 battery cell (Instagram: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BQ3UpgZAGiH\/?taken-by=bypantheon&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bypantheon<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve totally custom-engineered that cell, working jointly with Panasonic to create\u2026an automotive cell, tested to automotive standards,\u201d Chief Technical Officer JB Straubel told the <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sae.org\/11923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Society of Automotive Engineers<\/a> (SAE) in 2013. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t go into laptops anywhere. What keeps us in that general shape and size is the production and cost efficiency. Tesla and Panasonic have now developed a new and improved type of cell, which will be used in the upcoming Model 3. The new 2170 cell, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/evannex.com\/blogs\/news\/what-did-elon-musk-reveal-at-teslas-secretive-gigafactory-event-this-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now being produced at the Gigafactory<\/a>, is slightly larger &#8211; 21 mm by 70 mm. More importantly, it can store a lot more energy. According to Elon Musk, it\u2019s \u201cthe highest energy density cell in the world, and also the cheapest.\u201d\u00a0The 2170 cell is around 50% larger by volume than the 18650, but it can deliver almost double the current (the 18650 delivers 3,000 mA, and the 2170 has been tested at 5,750-6,000 mA).<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ga4L1w66AbU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Above: Inside the 2170 battery cell (Youtube: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ga4L1w66AbU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portable Electric Vehicle<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tesla hopes to produce these new, larger cells at the same cost as the old cells, which means a reduction in total battery cost. It\u2019s also assumed (though Tesla won\u2019t confirm any numbers at this point) that the battery chemistry has been improved, yielding a higher energy density. But how much? This question is being discussed at great length, and not only by techies.
