The scientists used a cathode made of anthraquinone, instead of one based on graphene, increasing energy density.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists from Sweden\u2019s Chalmers University of Technology and Slovenia\u2019s National Institute of Chemistry say they have created <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/press-releases\/aluminium-set-to-make-a-charge-on-battery-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aluminum batteries<\/a> with higher energy density and potentially wide renewable energy storage applications.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to typical aluminum batteries, which use an aluminum anode and graphene cathode, the new device features an organic, nanostructured cathode made of carbon-based molecule anthraquinone.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper <em><a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2405829719308931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Concept and electrochemical mechanism of an Al metal anode \u2012 organic cathode battery<\/a><\/em>, published in <em>Energy Storage Materials<\/em>, the researchers explained anthraquinone enables storage of positive charge-carriers from the electrolyte, ensuring their device has twice the energy density of conventional aluminum batteries. \u201cBecause the new cathode material makes it possible to use a more appropriate charge-carrier, the batteries can make better usage of aluminum\u2019s potential,\u201d the researchers stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chlorine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The current version of the electrolyte, however, contains chlorine the research team wants to eliminate.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists claim, although aluminum storage technology is a long way from commercial production, the new device will be able to compete or complement lithium-ion storage. \u201cSo far, aluminum batteries are only half as energy dense as lithium-ion batteries but our long-term goal is to achieve the same energy density,\u201d stated the paper.<\/p>\n<p>Aluminum in principle works better than lithium-ion as a charge carrier, according to the research group. \u201cFurthermore, the batteries have the potential to be significantly less environmentally harmful,\u201d said research co-author Patrik Johansson.<\/p>\n<p>Source:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/09\/30\/new-aluminum-batteries-for-renewables-storage\/\">https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/09\/30\/new-aluminum-batteries-for-renewables-storage\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image: Yen Strandqvist\/Chalmers<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[113,91],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-industrial-news","category-news-center"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
