Harmon <time datetime=\"2019-10-30T12:00:00Z\">October 30, 2019<\/time><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"body\"><span class=\"head\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6896\" src=\"https:\/\/battery9999.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/7-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s (<span class=\"caps\">DOE<\/span>) Argonne National Laboratory have reported a new mechanism to speed up the charging of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Simply exposing the cathode to a beam of concentrated light \u2014 for example, the white light from a xenon lamp \u2014 lowers the battery charging time by a remarkable factor of two or more. If commercialized, such technology could be a game changer for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Owners of electric vehicles are well aware of \u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>range anxiety\u201d as the charge level runs low or the location of the closest charging station seems too distant. Fast charging remains a critical challenge if such vehicles are ever to capture a large segment of the transportation market. Charging for an electric car on empty typically takes about eight hours.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>We wanted to greatly shorten this charge reaction without damaging the electrodes from the resulting higher current flow.\u201d \u2014 Christopher Johnson, Argonne Distinguished Fellow<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Special supercharging stations now exist that achieve ultrafast charging of electric vehicles by delivering a much higher current to the battery. Passing too much current over too short a time, however, degrades battery performance.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, lithium-ion batteries for vehicles are slowly charged to obtain a complete electrochemical reaction. This reaction involves removing lithium from the oxide cathode and inserting it into the graphite anode.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>We wanted to greatly shorten this charge reaction without damaging the electrodes from the resulting higher current flow,\u201d said Christopher Johnson, Argonne Distinguished Fellow and group leader in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering division.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s lithium-ion batteries work in a dark state, with the electrodes housed in a case. Argonne\u2019s photo-assisted technology would use a transparent container that allows concentrated light to illuminate the battery electrodes during charging.<\/p>\n<p>To probe the charge process, the research team crafted small lithium-ion cells (\u201ccoin cells\u201d) with transparent quartz windows. They then tested these cells with and without white light shining through the window onto the cathode.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>We hypothesized that, during charging, white light would interact favorably with the typical cathode material, and that proved to be the case in our cell tests,\u201d Johnson said. That cathode material is a lithium manganese oxide, abbreviated as LiMn<sub><span class=\"numbers\">2<\/span><\/sub>O<sub><span class=\"numbers\">4<\/span><\/sub> (<span class=\"caps\">LMO<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>The key ingredient in this favorable reaction is the interplay of light with <span class=\"caps\">LMO<\/span>, a semiconducting material known to interact with light. While absorbing the photons in the light during charging, the element manganese in the <span class=\"caps\">LMO<\/span> changes its charge state from trivalent to tetravalent (Mn<sup><span class=\"numbers\">3<\/span>+<\/sup> to Mn<sup><span class=\"numbers\">4<\/span>+<\/sup>). In response, lithium ions eject faster from the cathode than would occur without the photon-excitation process.<\/p>\n<p>This condition drives the battery reaction faster. The team found that the faster reaction resulted in faster charging without degrading battery performance or cycle life. \u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Our cell tests showed a factor of two decrease in charging time with the light turned on,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>The research team performed this work as part of the Center for Electrochemical Energy Science (<span class=\"caps\">CEES<\/span>), a <span class=\"caps\">DOE<\/span> Energy Frontier Research Center (<span class=\"caps\">EFRC<\/span>) led by Argonne.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>This research is a great example of how <span class=\"caps\">CEES<\/span>\u2019s goal of understanding the electrode processes in lithium-ion batteries is enabling pivotal advances that are influencing technology,\u201d said Paul Fenter, <span class=\"caps\">CEES<\/span> Director and senior physicist in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering division. \u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>This is emblematic of the transformational impacts that the <span class=\"caps\">EFRC<\/span> program can achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson added that, \u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>This finding is the first of its kind whereby light and battery technologies are merged, and this intersection bodes well for the future of innovative charging concepts for batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vehicle Technologies Office of the <span class=\"caps\">DOE<\/span> Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has identified fast charge as a critical challenge in ensuring mass adoption of electric vehicles with a goal of <span class=\"numbers\">15<\/span>-min. recharge time, and this research could be a key to making this possible.<\/p>\n<p>This research appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-019-12863-6\">Nature Communications<\/a><em>, <\/em>titled \u200b<span class=\"pull-double\">\u201c<\/span>Photo-accelerated fast charging of lithium-ion batteries.\u201d In addition to Johnson, other Argonne contributors are Anna Lee, M\u00e1rton V\u00f6r\u00f6s, Wesley M.
