The partnership, the French organization said at the time, was aimed at developing thin, flexible solar cells which could function where conventional, inorganic solar cells could not.<\/p>\n<p>The <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/12\/10\/liten-research-institute-claims-24-25-efficiency-for-heterojunction-cell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new energy technologies and nanomaterials<\/a> (Liten) division of the <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/11\/05\/french-consortium-develops-hybrid-storage-and-co-generation-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission<\/a> and Toyoba have published the first results of six months of research: small organic solar cells they say offer the \u201cbest conversion efficiency in the world in a dark room\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring a verification experiment under neon lighting of 220 lux \u2013 equivalent to the brightness of a dark room \u2013 it was confirmed that the product tested had achieved a conversion efficiency of about 25%, or 60% more than that of <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2019\/11\/15\/russian-scientists-claim-8-8-efficiency-for-amorphous-solar-cell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amorphous silicon solar cells<\/a> commonly used for pocket calculators,\u201d said Liten and Toyobo. The latter firmed up the claim by stating it measured efficiency of 16% under the same brightness for amorphous silicon devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PET project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The researchers used an energy-generating material developed by Toyobo which uses organic synthesis technology the company created during years of research in fine chemistry. \u201cThis material can dissolve easily, even in halogen-free solvents, allowing it to be applied uniformly on a substrate and to produce energy stably with few individual differences,\u201d said the Japanese company. The research group optimized the solvents and the technique of coating the organic cells on a glass substrate.<\/p>\n<p>Liten and Toyobo have also developed prototypes of organic solar modules on a <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2015\/09\/11\/polish-perovskites-attracts-japanese-investor_100021050\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film substrate<\/a> over an effective area of \u200b\u200b18cm<sup>2<\/sup>, despite the increased difficulty of applying on PET film.
