A pesar de lo \u00fatiles que son las fuentes de energ\u00eda renovable, deben estar respaldadas por sistemas de almacenamiento que mantengan la energ\u00eda para los momentos en que el sol no brilla o el viento no sopla.\u00a0Ocean Battery es un nuevo dise\u00f1o para un sistema de almacenamiento de energ\u00eda que funciona un poco como una represa hidroel\u00e9ctrica en el fondo del mar.<\/p>\n

Desarrollada por la startup holandesa Ocean Grazer, Ocean Battery est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ada para instalarse en el lecho marino cerca de\u00a0generadores de energ\u00eda renovable en<\/a>\u00a0alta mar\u00a0, como\u00a0turbinas e\u00f3licas<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0granjas solares flotantes<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0sistemas de\u00a0energ\u00eda\u00a0<\/a>mareomotriz<\/a>\u00a0y\u00a0undimotriz<\/a>\u00a0.\u00a0Se compone de tres componentes que juntos funcionan seg\u00fan un principio similar al de una represa hidroel\u00e9ctrica.<\/p>\n

Enterrado en el lecho marino hay un dep\u00f3sito de hormig\u00f3n que contiene hasta 20 millones de litros (5,3 millones de galones) de agua dulce, almacenada a baja presi\u00f3n.\u00a0Un sistema de bombas y turbinas conecta este dep\u00f3sito a una vejiga flexible en el lecho marino.\u00a0El exceso de electricidad de las fuentes renovables se puede utilizar para bombear agua desde el dep\u00f3sito hasta la vejiga.\u00a0Cuando se necesita la energ\u00eda, la vejiga se libera y, impulsada por la presi\u00f3n del agua de mar sobre ella, empuja el agua hacia el dep\u00f3sito, haciendo girar las turbinas en el camino para generar electricidad que se alimenta a la red.<\/p>\n

El equipo de Ocean Grazer dice que el sistema tiene una eficiencia de entre el 70 y el 80 por ciento y deber\u00eda poder ejecutar una cantidad ilimitada de ciclos durante una vida \u00fatil de operaci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de 20 a\u00f1os. Tambi\u00e9n es bastante escalable: cada reservorio de concreto tiene una capacidad de 10 MWh, por lo que agregar m\u00e1s de estos puede aumentar la capacidad general.
