Non seulement la batterie est peu co\u00fbteuse, mais elle r\u00e9siste au feu et aux pannes, et peut \u00eatre charg\u00e9e tr\u00e8s rapidement, ce qui pourrait la rendre utile pour alimenter une maison ou recharger des v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques.<\/p>\n<p>Les batteries lithium-ion ont domin\u00e9 le domaine au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur fiabilit\u00e9 et leur haute densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique. Cependant, le lithium devient plus rare et plus cher, et les piles peuvent \u00eatre dangereuses, exploser ou s\u2019enflammer si elles sont endommag\u00e9es ou mal utilis\u00e9es. Des alternatives moins ch\u00e8res et plus s\u00fbres sont n\u00e9cessaires, d\u2019autant plus que le monde \u00e9volue vers les \u00e9nergies renouvelables et les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9quipe du MIT a donc entrepris de concevoir un nouveau type de batterie \u00e0 partir de mat\u00e9riaux facilement disponibles et peu co\u00fbteux. Apr\u00e8s une recherche et quelques essais et erreurs, ils ont opt\u00e9 pour l\u2019aluminium pour une \u00e9lectrode et le soufre pour l\u2019autre, compl\u00e9t\u00e9s par un \u00e9lectrolyte de sel de chloro-aluminate fondu. Non seulement tous ces ingr\u00e9dients sont bon march\u00e9 et courants, mais ils ne sont pas inflammables, il n\u2019y a donc aucun risque d\u2019incendie ou d\u2019explosion.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de tests, l\u2019\u00e9quipe a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que les nouvelles cellules de batterie peuvent supporter des centaines de cycles de charge et se recharger tr\u00e8s rapidement \u2013 dans certaines exp\u00e9riences, moins d\u2019une minute. Les cellules ne co\u00fbteraient qu\u2019un sixi\u00e8me du prix d\u2019une cellule lithium-ion de taille similaire.<\/p>\n<p>Ils peuvent non seulement fonctionner \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures \u00e9lev\u00e9es allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 200 \u00b0C (392 \u00b0F), mais ils fonctionnent mieux lorsqu\u2019ils sont plus chauds \u2013 \u00e0 110 \u00b0C (230 \u00b0F), les batteries se chargent 25 fois plus vite qu\u2019\u00e0 25 \u00b0C. (77\u00a0\u00b0F). Surtout, les chercheurs affirment que la batterie n\u2019a pas besoin d\u2019\u00e9nergie externe pour atteindre cette temp\u00e9rature \u00e9lev\u00e9e \u2013 son cycle habituel de charge et de d\u00e9charge est suffisant pour la garder aussi chaude.<\/p>\n<p>Bien que le type de sel dans l\u2019\u00e9lectrolyte ait \u00e9t\u00e9 choisi parce qu\u2019il a un point de fusion bas, il a par co\u00efncidence un autre avantage : il emp\u00eache naturellement la formation de dendrites. Ces vrilles m\u00e9talliques, qui grossissent progressivement entre les deux \u00e9lectrodes jusqu\u2019\u00e0 provoquer un court-circuit, constituent un obstacle majeur pour les batteries, notamment les cellules lithium-ion.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9quipe affirme que cette conception de batterie serait mieux adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle de quelques dizaines de kilowattheures, comme alimenter une maison individuelle \u00e0 partir de sources renouvelables. Elles pourraient \u00e9galement \u00eatre utiles comme bornes de recharge pour v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur recharge rapide. D\u2019autres types de batteries, comme une conception r\u00e9cente utilisant un \u00e9lectrolyte de sel fondu et des \u00e9lectrodes en aluminium et en nickel, pourraient mieux fonctionner \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle du r\u00e9seau.<\/p>\n<p>Les brevets des batteries aluminium-soufre ont \u00e9t\u00e9 conc\u00e9d\u00e9s sous licence \u00e0 une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9riv\u00e9e appel\u00e9e Avanti, cofond\u00e9e par l\u2019un des auteurs de l\u2019\u00e9tude d\u00e9crivant la conception.
