Mais cela ne signifie pas qu&#8217;elles constituent la meilleure solution pour tous les domaines d&#8217;application. La TU Wien a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 mettre au point une batterie oxyg\u00e8ne-ion qui pr\u00e9sente d&#8217;importants avantages. Bien qu&#8217;elle ne permette pas d&#8217;atteindre des densit\u00e9s d&#8217;\u00e9nergie aussi \u00e9lev\u00e9es que la batterie lithium-ion, sa capacit\u00e9 de stockage ne diminue pas irr\u00e9m\u00e9diablement avec le temps : elle peut \u00eatre r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e et peut donc permettre une dur\u00e9e de vie extr\u00eamement longue.<\/p>\n<p>En outre, les batteries oxyg\u00e8ne-ion peuvent \u00eatre produites sans \u00e9l\u00e9ments rares et sont constitu\u00e9es de mat\u00e9riaux incombustibles. Une demande de brevet pour la nouvelle id\u00e9e de batterie a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9pos\u00e9e avec des partenaires de coop\u00e9ration espagnols. La batterie oxyg\u00e8ne-ion pourrait \u00eatre une excellente solution pour les grands syst\u00e8mes de stockage d&#8217;\u00e9nergie, par exemple pour stocker l&#8217;\u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique provenant de sources renouvelables.<\/p>\n<h3>Les mat\u00e9riaux c\u00e9ramiques, une nouvelle solution<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Nous avons une grande exp\u00e9rience des mat\u00e9riaux c\u00e9ramiques qui peuvent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s pour les piles \u00e0 combustible depuis un certain temps&#8221;, explique Alexander Schmid de l&#8217;Institut des technologies chimiques et de l&#8217;analyse de l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 technique de Vienne. &#8220;Cela nous a donn\u00e9 l&#8217;id\u00e9e d&#8217;\u00e9tudier si ces mat\u00e9riaux pouvaient \u00e9galement convenir \u00e0 la fabrication d&#8217;une batterie&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Les mat\u00e9riaux c\u00e9ramiques \u00e9tudi\u00e9s par l&#8217;\u00e9quipe de la TU Wien peuvent absorber et lib\u00e9rer des ions d&#8217;oxyg\u00e8ne doublement charg\u00e9s n\u00e9gativement. Lorsqu&#8217;une tension \u00e9lectrique est appliqu\u00e9e, les ions d&#8217;oxyg\u00e8ne migrent d&#8217;un mat\u00e9riau c\u00e9ramique \u00e0 l&#8217;autre, apr\u00e8s quoi ils peuvent migrer \u00e0 nouveau, g\u00e9n\u00e9rant ainsi un courant \u00e9lectrique.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Le principe de base est en fait tr\u00e8s similaire \u00e0 celui des batteries lithium-ion&#8221;, explique le professeur J\u00fcrgen Fleig. &#8220;Mais nos mat\u00e9riaux pr\u00e9sentent d&#8217;importants avantages. La c\u00e9ramique n&#8217;est pas inflammable, ce qui exclut pratiquement tout risque d&#8217;incendie, comme c&#8217;est souvent le cas avec les batteries lithium-ion. En outre, il n&#8217;est pas n\u00e9cessaire d&#8217;utiliser des \u00e9l\u00e9ments rares, qui sont co\u00fbteux ou qui ne peuvent \u00eatre extraits que d&#8217;une mani\u00e8re nuisible \u00e0 l&#8217;environnement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u00c0 cet \u00e9gard, l&#8217;utilisation de mat\u00e9riaux c\u00e9ramiques pr\u00e9sente un grand avantage, car ils peuvent \u00eatre tr\u00e8s bien adapt\u00e9s&#8221;, explique Tobias Huber. &#8220;Il est possible de remplacer certains \u00e9l\u00e9ments difficiles \u00e0 obtenir par d&#8217;autres relativement facilement. Le prototype de la batterie utilise encore du lanthane, un \u00e9l\u00e9ment qui n&#8217;est pas vraiment rare, mais pas non plus tr\u00e8s courant. Mais m\u00eame le lanthane doit \u00eatre remplac\u00e9 par un \u00e9l\u00e9ment moins cher, et des recherches sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 en cours \u00e0 ce sujet. Le cobalt ou le nickel, qui entrent dans la composition de nombreuses batteries, ne sont pas utilis\u00e9s du tout.<\/p>\n<h3>Une dur\u00e9e de vie \u00e9lev\u00e9e<\/h3>\n<p>Mais l&#8217;avantage le plus important de la nouvelle technologie des piles est peut-\u00eatre sa long\u00e9vit\u00e9 potentielle : &#8220;Dans de nombreuses batteries, le probl\u00e8me est qu&#8217;\u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9, les porteurs de charge ne peuvent plus se d\u00e9placer&#8221;, explique Alexander Schmid. &#8220;Ils ne peuvent alors plus \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s pour produire de l&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, la capacit\u00e9 de la batterie diminue. Apr\u00e8s de nombreux cycles de charge, cela peut devenir un probl\u00e8me s\u00e9rieux&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>La batterie oxyg\u00e8ne-ion, en revanche, peut \u00eatre r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e sans probl\u00e8me : Si de l&#8217;oxyg\u00e8ne est perdu en raison de r\u00e9actions secondaires, cette perte peut simplement \u00eatre compens\u00e9e par de l&#8217;oxyg\u00e8ne provenant de l&#8217;air ambiant.<\/p>\n<p>Le nouveau concept de batterie n&#8217;est pas destin\u00e9 aux smartphones ou aux voitures \u00e9lectriques, car la batterie oxyg\u00e8ne-ion n&#8217;atteint qu&#8217;un tiers environ de la densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique des batteries lithium-ion et fonctionne \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures comprises entre 200 et 400 \u00b0C. La technologie est toutefois extr\u00eamement int\u00e9ressante pour le stockage de l&#8217;\u00e9nergie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Si vous avez besoin d&#8217;une grande unit\u00e9 de stockage d&#8217;\u00e9nergie pour stocker temporairement l&#8217;\u00e9nergie solaire ou \u00e9olienne, par exemple, la batterie oxyg\u00e8ne-ion pourrait \u00eatre une excellente solution&#8221;, explique Alexander Schmid. &#8220;Si vous construisez un b\u00e2timent entier rempli de modules de stockage d&#8217;\u00e9nergie, la densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique plus faible et la temp\u00e9rature de fonctionnement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e ne jouent pas un r\u00f4le d\u00e9cisif.
