Bien que prometteuse, cette m\u00e9thode pose des questions de s\u00fbret\u00e9 li\u00e9es \u00e0 la radioactivit\u00e9 de l\u2019or produit. Une start-up californienne, Marathon Fusion, affirme avoir trouv\u00e9 un moyen de produire de l\u2019or \u00e0 partir de mercure en exploitant l\u2019\u00e9nergie de la fusion nucl\u00e9aire, rapporte le Financial Times. Fond\u00e9e en 2023 \u00e0 San Francisco par Kyle Schiller et Adam Rutkowski, l\u2019entreprise se consacre \u00e0 la recherche d\u2019innovations pour les futurs r\u00e9acteurs \u00e0 fusion, avec une \u00e9quipe de 12 personnes et un financement combin\u00e9 de 9,9 millions de dollars provenant d\u2019investissements priv\u00e9s et de subventions f\u00e9d\u00e9rales.<\/p>\n<p>Selon un article scientifique publi\u00e9 par la soci\u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0et cit\u00e9 par le journal britannique, les r\u00e9actions \u00e0 fusion lib\u00e8rent des neutrons \u00e0 haute \u00e9nergie qui pourraient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s dans un processus de transmutation nucl\u00e9aire. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 consisterait \u00e0 introduire un isotope sp\u00e9cifique, le mercure-198, dans une partie du r\u00e9acteur con\u00e7ue pour capter ces particules, afin de d\u00e9clencher une transformation qui m\u00e8nerait \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019or. L\u2019id\u00e9e de Marathon est d\u2019exploiter ces m\u00eames neutrons pour transformer le mercure-198 en mercure-197. Cet isotope, instable, se d\u00e9sint\u00e8gre naturellement en or-197 apr\u00e8s environ 64 heures. L\u2019or-197 \u00e9tant le seul isotope stable du m\u00e9tal, cette transformation permettrait d\u2019obtenir de l\u2019or pur sans compromettre l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique du syst\u00e8me. Les fondateurs avancent qu\u2019un r\u00e9acteur \u00e0 fusion g\u00e9n\u00e9rant un gigawatt pourrait produire jusqu\u2019\u00e0 5 tonnes d\u2019or par an, soit une valeur \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 celle de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e. En d&#8217;autres termes, cette m\u00e9thode pourrait potentiellement doubler la rentabilit\u00e9 d\u2019une centrale de fusion, toujours selon le Financial Times. Le physicien Ahmed Diallo du laboratoire national de Princeton du d\u00e9partement am\u00e9ricain de l\u2019\u00c9nergie a indiqu\u00e9 que la proposition avait \u00e9t\u00e9 bien accueillie par ses coll\u00e8gues, bien qu\u2019elle n\u2019ait pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 soumise \u00e0 une \u00e9valuation par leurs pairs. Toutefois, un obstacle majeur demeure : la production d\u2019isotopes instables d\u2019or due \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019autres types de mercure. Pour cette raison, l\u2019or produit pourrait pr\u00e9senter une certaine radioactivit\u00e9 r\u00e9siduelle, obligeant \u00e0 le stocker pendant 14 \u00e0 18 ans avant qu\u2019il ne soit consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme totalement s\u00fbr.
