Toyota said to delay production of next-generation EVs
Wednesday, Nov. 27
NHK has learned Toyota Motor plans to push back the production date of its next-generation electric vehicles.
The company is said to want a longer development time to incorporate the latest technologies in making the cars.
Japan’s biggest automaker now plans to start production in mid-2027 of its next-generation Lexus EV from an original plan to have it on the market in 2026.
Toyota unveiled a concept model of the vehicle at the Japan Mobility Show in the fall last year. It will reportedly have a range of 1,000 kilometers and can be fully charged in 20 minutes.
Toyota will use time-saving technology known as giga-casting to make the car. This method produces large vehicle parts such as front and rear underbodies as one component, instead of several. It also plans to introduce new operating software in the vehicle.
Toyota aims to produce 1.5 million EVs globally in 2026. The company says this includes plug-in hybrids as demand for those vehicles is expected to grow.
